Enzo Maresca reveals message from Chelsea owners after Blues beat Wolves in Premier League

Enzo Maresca insists Chelsea need time to build a team capable of challenging for top honours – and he believes his employers at Stamford Bridge agree.

Chelsea beat Wolves 6-2, giving Maresca his first Premier League win for the West London side, with Noni Madueke scoring a hat-trick in 14 minutes at Molineux.

New head coach Maresca then confirmed that the owners of Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital simply want to lay the foundation for future success in the highest trophies this season.

Maresca is convinced that Chelsea’s owners realise they need stability and consistency to compete for the Premier League and Champions League titles.

Maresca confirmed that the Chelsea owners do not see this season as the year to mount a serious challenge, explaining: “Our goal at the moment is to see how we can improve ourselves and to improve the players.

“The owners only asked me to improve the players and the team, and they didn’t ask us to compete for the Premier League or the Champions League title this season.

“The goal is also to solve the economic problems, the reason why we have to sell players, and to do some things.

“I feel happy because of the squad and the players; I don’t feel happy because the club didn’t ask me to win the Premier League or secure a place in the Champions League.

“This is a club that won the Champions League three years ago, but then finished 12th and sixth. So to challenge this season, that is not the reality.

“I think we can build something important for the time, months, years. And we can arrive again to compete for those competitions.

“It’s not a process that you can suddenly start competing. The difference between us and Manchester City and Arsenal is that City have had the same manager for eight, nine years, and Arsenal have had the same manager for four, five years. And Chelsea have had the same manager for two months.

“This is the biggest difference for me right now.”

Madueke’s second-half hat-trick saw Chelsea turn a 2-2 half-time score into an away win for the Blues, and Maresca is excited about what awaits the club at Stamford Bridge this season.

“I want my team to play the way we want to play, to perform every game, that’s the most important thing,” said Maresca.

“We want to have a clear view of the ball and off the ball so we can be a very aggressive team.

“Today at some point we started to see our team; we will try to improve the players, and I feel very happy and glad to have this challenge.

“I think the selection is very good and I’m lucky to have so many players who are so versatile.”
