Twins announcer lashes out at Trevor Richards after wild pitch

Kris Atteberry sounded quite disappointed with reliever Trevor Richards and voiced his displeasure Friday night.

The Minnesota Twins radio host slammed the right-handed reliever after he threw yet another wild pitch during a 6-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. With two outs in the eighth inning, Richards threw a pitch that bounced well in front of the plate and went past catcher Ryan Jeffers, who had no chance of catching it. It came after Richards had already allowed two runs to score and was his second wild pitch of the game.

Atteberry said, “Another wild pitch. You know, we talk about him as a two-pitch guy, Richards is a three-pitch guy. It was the changeup, the fastball and the wild pitch.”

Video is below.

The Twins acquired Richards from the Toronto Blue Jays at the trade deadline, and he has been shaky at best. In nine appearances for Minnesota, he is 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 11 strikeouts versus 10 walks in 11 innings. He has also thrown six wild pitches in those nine outings, matching the six he threw in 45 games for Toronto.

Richards’ 12 wild pitches tie the MLB lead with Los Angeles Dodgers starter Tyler Glasnow. But Glasnow has done so in 134 innings, while Richards has thrown just 63 1/3 this season.

I think Twins fans and broadcasters are right to be frustrated at this point.
