Motorcyclist arrested near Saskatoon after allegedly eluding police at speeds of 260 km/h

Man is believed to have drowned while trying to save a child at Madge Lake

A 20-year-old Swanson man is said to have reached speeds of up to 260 kilometers per hour while fleeing police on Highway 45, south of Delisle, Sask.

A highway patrol officer spotted a sport utility motorcycle traveling at 100 mph and attempted to pull it over, but the driver ignored the lights and fled the scene, a press release said.

A Vanscoy RCMP officer attempted to stop the vehicle a short time later on the same highway, but the motorcyclist fled east on Highway 7 toward Saskatoon, traveling an estimated 200 km/h, police said.

The Saskatoon Police Service Air Support unit joined the pursuit and assisted officers on the ground. The motorcyclist then turned around and fled back towards Delisle.

The Highway Patrol officer who attempted the initial stop encountered the speeder again near Swanson, attempted another traffic stop and was again ignored, police said.

Air Support recorded the bike at speeds of 160 mph at certain points, police said. Air Support followed the bike as it entered a rural area near Swanson. Officers saw a man attempt to hide the bike and then flee on foot.

A man was arrested without incident in an outbuilding on the property and now faces three charges of fleeing a police officer and dangerous driving.

He is scheduled to appear in court on May 8.
