Nepean elders hold a barbecue to connect with local families

A sizzling grill braved the rain at Wesley Clover Park on Saturday afternoon as seniors from the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre held a barbecue and games day to connect with youth.

Families filled their plates with food and took cover under a row of tents where they challenged each other to a series of nostalgic games.

“We’re trying to bring the two groups together by showcasing the kind of games we used to play,” said Ian Rayburn, a customer at the information centre.

While some preferred Uno and chess, a fierce game of Connect Four broke out in one of the middle tents.

During the periods when it did not rain, families played horseshoe throwing and hopscotch.

“It’s nice to have an afternoon where the phones aren’t working and we can just go outside and play and have fun,” said mom Jenna Machum as her daughter Frankie waved a bubble wand through the air.

“It really speaks to people’s need to get out and really connect with their community, connect with their families, meet new people and try out some games,” said Andrea Nelson, director of customer service of the resource center.

Metro provided the food for the afternoon and also presented a check for $2,000 to the information center. Officials say the money will go toward hosting more community meals in the future.

“We have a social dining program,” Nelson said. “We bring seniors and people with disabilities together to combat isolation and enjoy a really nutritious meal.”

It was the first time the center had hosted an outdoor barbecue, but despite the bad weather, officials said it was a recipe for success.
