Trial against Jeffrey Dumba postponed until October

Trial against Jeffrey Dumba postponed until October

The trial of a former Regina high school teacher accused of sexually exploiting a 15-year-old student has been postponed until October.

Jeffrey Dumba was back on the stand Friday. During the second day of cross-examination by the prosecutor, the 52-year-old stuck to his story of innocence.

Dumba is accused of five counts of sexual exploitation, dating back to the summer of 2021.

He has pleaded not guilty to all five charges.

Dumba told the court that in the summer of 2021 he was active on social media, mainly on the app Snapchat.

He said he pretended to be younger than himself on the app so students couldn’t find him on social media.

According to Dumba, it was the student who added him to the app.

In his testimony, he said the pair exchanged messages primarily on Snapchat, with communication eventually moving to iPhone messages.

He said he believed he was exchanging messages and nude photos with a woman in her 20s.

Dumba explained that he regretted not telling police that the victim had told him she was 20.

When he received an unfiltered photo of the female, he said he knew then that she was not in her 20s.

He told the court he had used drugs and drunk alcohol in the summer of 2021.

After confirming the victim’s identity, no more sexual conversations occurred and he deleted all of their messages, he explained.

After cross-examination, the defense presented another witness, a forensic examiner.

The trial was adjourned until October 28 for closing arguments.
