WestJet cancels St. John’s to Hamilton route after less than a month in the air

After less than a month in the air, WestJet has decided to cancel its route between St. John’s and Hamilton, Ontario, next month.

The route was announced in MarchIt started on May 17 and was due to run until mid-October, but WestJet says the service will now end from July 1.

The cancellation is part of WestJet’s broader plan to end connecting flights from Hamilton to airports in Atlantic Canada and Florida.

“The decision to discontinue service is never taken lightly and we understand this is disappointing news for our guests and the Hamilton community. We sincerely apologize for the potential impact,” spokesperson Madison Kruger said in an email to CBC News.

“We have informed our guests as much in advance as possible, either directly or through their travel agent.”

Affected customers will also receive refunds for the flights, Kruger added.

The news comes shortly after WestJet announced it too Route from St. John’s to Toronto after October 27.

The route to Hamilton was initially flown by budget airline Swoop, which merged with WestJet in October, with Swoop is disabled.

When the announcement was made that St. John’s and Hamilton were connecting, Vice President of External Affairs Andrew Gibbons said it was important to connect WestJet’s service between the two cities.

“We have heard loud and clear how critical connectivity from Ontario is to the region and we look forward to strengthening the connection between these two vibrant provinces,” Gibbons said in a statement in March.
