Colorado Avalanche signs AHL All-Star Matthew Phillips

The Colorado Avalanche have announced that they have signed forward Matthew Phillips to a one-year contract worth $775,000 at the NHL level and $287,500 at the AHL level.

Phillips played most of last season in the NHL, playing three games for the Pittsburgh Penguins and 28 for the Washington Capitals, scoring one goal and five points, all for the Capitals.

The 26-year-old played nine games for the Hershey Bears in the AHL regular season, scoring six points. He appeared in six AHL playoff games and was scoreless. After struggling with an injury, Phillips was unable to return to the Hershey lineup as the team won their second consecutive Calder Cup.

Phillips was selected in the sixth round by the Calgary Flames in 2016 and joined the Stockton Heat after a stellar WHL career in which he scored 281 points in 215 games.

Phillips has spent the majority of his professional career in the AHL with Stockton, Calgary and Hershey. In 274 career AHL games, he has 106 goals and 137 assists. He is a two-time AHL All-Star and was named to the AHL First All-Star Team in 2022-23.

The Calgary, AB native has five points in 34 NHL games. Phillips is a small and extremely skilled player, he has talented players to play with in the Avalanche and will be a top player for the Colorado Eagles if he lands in the AHL.
