5 earthquakes reported off Vancouver Island: USGS

The United States Geological Survey reported five earthquakes in quick succession off the coast of Vancouver Island on Wednesday (July 3).

The first was a magnitude 4.4 earthquake at 12:59 p.m., about 133 miles (214 kilometers) southwest of Tofino.

The second, magnitude 4.7, was at 1:18 a.m. and further west of the island. The next was three minutes later at magnitude 4.5 and 135 miles southwest of Tofino.

The fourth, at 1:23 p.m., was located 139 miles (208 kilometers) southwest of Tofino and measured 4.3 on the Richter scale.

The fifth, a magnitude 4.0 quake, struck 216 kilometers southwest of Tofino at 2:14 p.m.

According to the US Geological Survey, all five earthquakes occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.

However, Earthquakes Canada is only reporting the two quakes: the first at 12:59 p.m. as a 3.9 magnitude quake and the second, a 4.1 magnitude quake, at 1:12 p.m. The company says the first quake was not felt.
