Traveled former KU winger Svi Mykhailiuk agrees to four-year contract with NBA’s Utah Jazz

Traveled former KU winger Svi Mykhailiuk agrees to four-year contract with NBA’s Utah Jazz

Former University of Kansas basketball player Svi Mykhailiuk, 27, is set to play for his eighth NBA team.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound native of Cherkasy, Ukraine — he played at KU from 2014-15 to 2017-18 and was most recently a member of the Boston Celtics’ 2024 NBA title team — agreed to a four-year, $15 million contract with the Utah Jazz on Friday, Sports International Group’s Michael Lelchitski told ESPN.com.

The first year of Mykhailiuk’s contract is fully guaranteed at $3.5 million, The Athletic reported. The next three are non-guaranteed.

Mykhailiuk was a second-round selection, with the 47th overall pick, in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. Before joining the Celtics in free agency ahead of the 2023-24 season, Mykhailiuk played for the LA Lakers, Detroit Pistons, Oklahoma City Thunder, Toronto Raptors, New York Knicks and Charlotte Hornets.

Mykhailiuk earned $2.4 million with Boston last season on a one-year contract.

He played in 41 regular season games, averaging 10.1 minutes and 4.0 points. He appeared in eight playoff games in 2024, including three in the Finals against Dallas.

Mykhailiuk last appeared in more than 50 NBA games in a season in 2021 with the Raptors, averaging 5.0 points in 13 minutes per game.

Mykhailiuk joins a Utah team in the midst of a rebuilding process. Earlier this week, the Jazz extended the contract of forward Lauri Markkanen, the son of former KU forward Pekka Markkanen. Mykhailiuk is expected to have minutes available in the Jazz’s regular rotation.

“With the Lauri Markkanen extension now in the rearview mirror, the Jazz are poised to make several contracts official,” wrote Sarah Todd of the Deseret News. “After signing Mykhailiuk, Drew Eubanks, Johnny Juzang and rookie Kyle Filipowski, the Jazz have filled 14 of their 15 roster spots. Traditionally, the team likes to leave the final roster spot open as it moves through training camp heading into a new season.”

Mykhailiuk played four seasons at KU and was a two-year starter. He was an All-Big 12 second-team selection in 2018. He broke the Kansas single-season record for 3-point field goals made with 115 in 2017-18.

Mykhailiuk was also a two-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree and was second on the KU team with a 14.6 scoring average his senior season. Mykhailiuk currently ranks No. 5 on the Kansas 3-point field goals made list with 237, No. 6 on the 3-point field goals attempted list with 579 and No. 43 in scoring with 1,181 points.

He is the second basketball player from Ukraine and the 16th from KU to win an NBA title. Slava Medvedenko from Ukraine won NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2001 and 2002.

Mykhailiuk becomes the eighth Jayhawk to play for head coach Bill Self and go on to win an NBA title, joining Wayne Simien (2006, Miami), Mario Chalmers (2012, 2013, Miami), Brandon Rush (2015, Golden State), Sasha Kaun (2016, Cleveland), Markieff Morris (2020, Lakers), Andrew Wiggins (2022, Golden State) and Christian Braun (2023, Denver).
