City of Kitchener launches new walking soccer program

A new program from the City of Kitchener is giving seniors the chance to play soccer.

Walking soccer is similar to regular soccer, but with a twist: there is no running, jogging or physical contact and the ball must remain below head height.

“Normally people believe that their playing time is over after a certain year, but we want to encourage older adults and seniors to continue playing,” said Julio Realegeno, community program coordinator with the City of Kitchener.

It is perfect for seniors who want to continue playing the game or even try it out for the first time.

“Players don’t have to be at a certain level to participate in this sport. It’s more of a welcoming, safe environment where people can just kick a ball around with friends,” Realegeno said.

His father, who bears the same name, is one of the participants.

“I’m from El Salvador and we love football more than anything,” said senior Julio Realegeno. “It’s very fun for me.”

The tension is only expected to increase as Canada will co-host the World Cup for the first time in 2026.

Participants do not need any additional equipment. They only need to bring their running shoes.

“This sport is very beautiful because it is very inclusive and simple,” said Realegeno.

The drop-in program takes place every Thursday morning in RBJ Schlegel Park.

The city hopes to offer another season in the fall.
