Calgary Zoo Welcomes Second Young Egyptian Tortoise

Officials at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo have announced the birth of a second Egyptian tortoise.

The first turtle hatchling was welcomed on July 8, from a nest of two eggs laid by the facility’s 13-year-old turtle Alexandria.

The zoo announced the arrival of the second tortoise on Thursday, which was welcomed on July 18.

“This tony-sized turtle can be identified by a small deformity to its beak and is being closely monitored by our dedicated Animal Care, Health & Welfare (ACHW) team,” a social media post said.

Although it is still early, the ACHW team reports that the little turtle is doing well and has already started eating some greens.

Egyptian tortoises are critically endangered.

Zoo officials say the arrival of not one, but two new animals is a “major milestone.”

The little turtles are not yet open to the public.
