Tired Carlos Alcaraz withdraws from ATP Masters in Montreal

“It’s been a very long season for me and due to the accumulation of games and fatigue, I won’t be able to play in Montreal this year,” Alcaraz said. “I was really looking forward to coming back to Canada and enjoying the love of the fans. I hope to see everyone in Montreal in the coming years.”

Third-seeded Alcaraz, 37-6 this season, has a pre-season event later this month for the Masters in Cincinnati, where he lost in the final last year.

Alcaraz lost his season opener in Canada in 2022 and reached the quarterfinals last year.

“We are obviously disappointed that Carlos will not be there this year,” said tournament director Valerie Tetreault.

“We also knew he had a busy summer and is currently looking for a big achievement: winning back-to-back Roland Garros, Wimbledon and Olympic titles.”

The organizers also announced the withdrawal of number 26, Francisco Cerundolo, and number 30, Jiri Lehecka.

These changes allowed American Marcos Giron, ranked 38th, Australian Alexei Popyrin, ranked 63rd, and Italian Flavio Cobolli, ranked 48th, to qualify for the main tournament in Montreal.
