McGill University to fully reopen its city-centre campus on Monday

McGill University’s downtown will reopen Monday after access was restricted due to the dismantling of the pro-Palestinian camp that occupied part of the field.

According to a statement from McGill on Thursday afternoon, campus hours will be extended starting August 5.

“McGill ID is no longer required to enter lower campus,” the statement said. “All classes will continue to be held in their usual locations and on their usual schedule. All buildings will reopen for their normal hours and libraries will reopen for their normal schedule.”

From Monday, the campus will be open on weekdays from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

At weekends, starting August 10, it will be open from 8am to 8pm.

However, the university has indicated that students, staff and faculty must bring their McGill ID cards outside of opening hours.

This weekend, on August 3 and 4, the current measures remain in force:

-The lower campus is open from 8am to 5:30pm.

-McGill ID and access letters are required.

-Pedestrians/cyclists can access Milton, Roddick and McTavish gates. Motorists can also use Milton.

-The entrances to these buildings from the city streets will remain closed.

-The libraries on the lower campus also close at 5:30 PM

“We understand that this phased reopening has presented significant challenges for some members of our community, and we deeply regret these unavoidable consequences. We are grateful for the cooperation and understanding you have shown during this challenging time,” the statement said.

Camp at McGill University

Pro-Palestinian protesters set up camp at McGill on April 27, following similar demonstrations on other college campuses across North America.

Participants demanded that the university stop investing in companies that profit from the Israeli military operation in Gaza and that management sever all ties between McGill and Israeli universities.

The pro-Palestinian camp was dismantled by private security hired by McGill – citing health and safety concerns. An evacuation notice was delivered by the school just before 5 a.m. on July 10, and approximately 50 protesters were present at the time.
