Toronto Terror Plot: One Suspect Faces Court

One of two Toronto men accused of planning a “serious violent attack” in the city on behalf of ISIS appeared in court on Thursday.

Mostafa Eldidi, 26, and his father, Ahmed Fouad Mostafa Eldidi, 62, are charged with a total of six terrorism-related counts in connection with the alleged plot.

The younger Eldidi appeared virtually in court and was remanded in custody until August 7.

His father will appear in court at 2:30 p.m.

The RCMP, which announced charges against the two men on Wednesday, said an Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) became aware of the threat in early July.

The pair were arrested by an emergency response team in a Richmond Hill hotel room on July 28 after the men allegedly stole an axe and a machete.

Prosecutors allege in court documents that the father and son knowingly facilitated a terrorist activity and knowingly assisted the Islamic State in expanding its ability to carry out terrorist activities.

The documents also show that the two conspired to commit murder in the interest of, at the behest of, or in collaboration with the Islamic State.

Ahmed Fouad Mostafa Eldidi is separately charged with committing aggravated assault outside Canada for the benefit of Islamic State in June 2015.

The scale of the suspects’ alleged terrorist plot remains unclear. However, police said that while they believe the scale of the planned attack was “small,” it was also very “real.”
