Chrissy Teigen and John Legend’s Son Diagnosed with Diabetes

Chrissy Teigen shared that her 6-year-old son Miles has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Teigen, who has four children with EGOT winner John Legend, wrote about her son’s diagnosis on Instagram after some commenters noticed that Miles appeared to be wearing a diabetes monitor in a photo with Teigen and his sister Luna, 8, at the Paris Olympics.

“Many of you noticed something special about a photo I posted a few days ago,” she wrote. “You saw his type 1 diabetes monitor and gave him so much love and encouragement in every way possible.”

Teigen said Miles was only diagnosed a few weeks ago, when he was “sick in the hospital” with another infection.

“The doctors knew something else was wrong with his blood tests. I have since learned that this is how so many young children are diagnosed with type 1 – going to the hospital for something completely different,” she wrote. “After more testing, we learned he is in the ‘honeymoon period’ of a lifelong T1.”

Teigen said they gave Miles his “first insulin injection” earlier this week and that they were “so blessed to have so much support and an amazing, kind, and compassionate specialist.”

“Here we go! Another new world for us and we are definitely learning a lot as we fly,” she added.

Type 1 diabetes is “a disease of high blood sugars due to a lack of insulin production,” said Dr. Otis Brawley, Chief Medical Officer of the American Cancer Society. “Type 1 used to be called juvenile diabetes mellitus because it is most often diagnosed in children.”

In her post, Teigen expressed her gratitude for the support she has received following her son’s diagnosis. She wrote that her post “is meant to thank you so much for your kindness.”

“It helps Miles so much to know that so many other people are going through the same thing,” she wrote, “and he is not alone.”
