Wild weather in the Philippines, China, France and the United States

Below you will find an overview of some important weather reports from the past week around the world.

Typhoon Gaemi left a trail of destruction across the Philippines last week, sinking a ship off the coast of Taiwan and claiming dozens of lives.

In China, heavy rains have damaged nearly 1,000 homes and nearly 1,500 road collapses have been reported. More than 10,000 people have been forced to evacuate, including thousands living near a breached dam. Parts of Hunan province received about 65 centimeters (25 inches) of rain in a 24-hour period.

In France, Paris 2024 began with torrential rain. But most of France is now in the midst of a heat wave, with temperatures in and around Paris reaching the mid to high 30s. That’s a concern for athletes, of course, but also for visitors and locals trying to find ways to stay cool in a part of the world where air conditioning isn’t common. The heat also brought a series of heavy thunderstorms near Paris on Tuesday.

Heavy rains in Vermont caused roads to collapse and some homes to be torn off their foundations. Crews were called to about two dozen flood rescues. This came less than a month after the area was hit by severe flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Beryl. Parts of northern Vermont received about 15–20 centimeters (6–8 inches) of rain.
