S&P/TSX composite falls in late morning trading Thursday, US markets also fall – Winnipeg Free Press

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index erased the previous day’s gains in late morning trading on Thursday, falling 1.6 percent. Most major sectors fell, while U.S. markets also fell.

The S&P/TSX composite index fell 366.30 points to 22,744.51.

In New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 473.45 points to 40,369.34. The S&P 500 index fell 40.49 points to 5,481.81, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 180.58 points to 17,18.82.

The Canadian dollar was trading at 72.25 US cents, compared with 72.42 US cents on Wednesday.

The September crude oil contract fell 71 cents to US$77.20 a barrel and the September natural gas contract rose two cents to US$2.06 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract rose US$19.30 to US$2,492.30 an ounce and the September copper contract rose seven cents to US$4.11 a pound.
