New residential care programme completed in London

New residential care programme completed in London

Construction has been completed in London on a new residential care scheme designed to promote and maximise independent living, delivering 70 new homes and addressing the wider housing crisis in the region.

Situated on the site of a former care home in Cosgrove Close, Reardon Court in Enfield is designed to improve people’s quality of life through access to a multi-functional environment.

Two communal courtyards, a central social space and various auxiliary function spaces come together to create a community of its own, with hobby rooms, a library and a hair salon that promote a sense of independence and connectivity between residents. Accessible corridors are incorporated into the design around the courtyards to enhance communal living and promote social inclusion.

Leading multi-disciplinary consultancy Pick Everard is responsible for the project, working closely with contractor GRAHAM and Enfield City Council to deliver architecture, landscape architecture, project management, contract administration, technical consultancy, M&E, sustainability and energy, and civil and construction services.

John Clarke, Director at Pick Everard, said: “This is a valuable project, focusing on a specialist area of housing, drawing on our extensive experience in delivering affordable, high-quality care environments.

“The different elements of the scheme come together to create a mini community in Enfield where residents can enjoy a diverse range of active social and wellbeing opportunities, aided by inclusive and disability-conscious design. Each apartment benefits from an outward-facing balcony, with ground floor apartments having access to a garden space to really enhance the sense of independence that is present throughout the scheme.

“We look forward to residents and staff using this fantastic new space as it will have a positive impact for generations to come.”

The Enfield scheme has been praised by local representatives for its wider impact on addressing the housing shortage in the area, enabling older residents to move into high quality homes while increasing the availability of family homes in the area.

In addition to maximizing housing opportunities, the plan also incorporates a green design philosophy. Over 100 solar panels have been installed on the roof, along with sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) to aid rainwater management.

Social value was an important part of the project. For example, career interviews were held at nearby schools and local suppliers of materials were chosen.

Pat O’Hare, Regional Director at GRAHAM, said: “Reardon Court will provide independence, security and comfort for residents for years to come. This project underlines the importance of meeting the changing needs of an ageing population who require additional support and care.

“With its thoughtful design, comprehensive care services and commitment to fostering a sense of community, Reardon Court sets a new standard for independent living in later life.”
