John Owen Lowe, son of actor Rob Lowe, is making his mark on Hollywood as he charts his own path in the industry

Rob Lowe shares a close bond with his son John Owen Lowe, both on screen as they star together in the Netflix comedy series Unstableand out.

A well-known name for his roles in St. Elmo’s fire And Parks and recreationLowe is a devoted father of two sons with his wife Sheryl Berkoff.

While Lowe’s eldest son Matthew, born in September 1993, has built a successful career as a lawyer and venture capitalist, his youngest son John Owen, born in November 1995, has followed in his footsteps into the entertainment industry.

The father-son duo stars in the Netflix comedy series Unstablewhich premiered in March 2023 and returned for a second season on August 1, 2024. In addition to acting, John Owen is a co-creator, co-executive producer, and co-writer of the show.

This isn’t John Owen’s first acting gig, though. The actor began his career in Hollywood while still in college, working in the writers’ room and landing a recurring role on Lowe’s Fox sitcom The mill.

“Most people in high school haven’t even really thought about what they want to do,” Lowe told PEOPLE in June 2024. “(John Owen) always kind of knew what he wanted to do.”

With the release of Unstable Season 2, their father-son relationship is once again front and center. Here’s everything you need to know about Rob Lowe’s youngest son and co-star, John Owen Lowe.

He was born in 1995

Lowe and Berkoff welcomed John Owen on November 6, 1995. Growing up as the youngest son of a famous actor, he had a unique childhood.

“Probably around fifth or sixth grade, I remember looking back and re-evaluating certain things,” John Owen said The New York Times in March 2023. “Oh, it’s not normal to be nervous walking down the red carpet with your dad when you’re 8 years old.”

He began his career in Hollywood while still at Stanford University

John Owen graduated from Stanford University in 2018, where he combined his academic pursuits with his emerging career in entertainment. While still in college, he had a recurring role on Lowe’s Fox sitcom The mill and worked in the writers’ room.

In 2017, John Owen and Matthew also starred with Lowe in The Lowe Filesa documentary series in which the three investigated unsolved mysteries and supernatural legends.

Speaking to PEOPLE in June 2017, Lowe said the “creepy” stories that inspired the series actually brought them closer together, even before the show was made.

“When I had kids of my own, we would tell stories around the campfire and I would share them with them,” he said. “It was a way for us to bond as father and son.”

He loves to make fun of his father, especially on social media

In an interview with The New York Times, John Owen told the outlet that he’s made fun of his father “all his life,” adding, “It’s our love language.”

“He made it very easy for me to do it publicly as he became more and more present on social media, and then I found it impossible not to get involved,” said John Owen.

Among John Owen’s playful jabs is an ongoing segment in which he has John Stamos stand in for his father. For Lowe’s 60th birthday in March 2024, John Owen posted a photo on Instagram in which Stamos had been photoshopped into Lowe’s place. His father responded, “To say I’m surprised would be a lie.”

On Father’s Day in June 2024, the actor posted an Instagram Reel saying he was on his way to surprise his father. When he showed up at the door, Stamos opened the door and welcomed him.

“He’s very sporting about it,” John Owen said during a performance in Good morning America in July 2024.

Unstable was inspired by the relationship between John Owen and Lowe

Unstable follows an introverted Jackson (John Owen) who goes to work for his eccentric father, Ellis (Lowe), to protect him from a “disaster.”

John Owen and Lowe, who are both executive producers on the series, have said that the show is largely inspired by their real-life relationship, albeit in a highly exaggerated version.

“Ellis is 90 percent Rob, honestly,” John Owen said The New York Times in 2023. “I believe so.”

The father and son’s off-screen relationship is full of humor and playful banter, which has also influenced their on-screen dynamic.

“The genesis of the show was my son Johnny trolling me relentlessly online,” Lowe said Variety in June 2023. “He’s relentless and people liked it so much that he wisely came up with the idea: ‘Is there something here? The audience is giving you a signal, they’re interested in something.’ ”

He showed solidarity during the 2023 writers’ strike

In May 2023, John Owen joined the strike action of union members of the Writers Guild of America, who went on strike after weeks of failed negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

Lowe stood next to him and joined his son in solidarity.

He says he learned a lot from his father while working on Unstable

When speaking with The New York TimesJohn Owen said he learned “a lot” from his father while working with Lowe on their Netflix series.

“How someone in that position conducts themselves, when so many people are counting on you to perform day in and day out, I was impressed,” the aspiring actor said.

In July 2024, the actor spoke about Good morning America about how he’s learned to “be more professional on set” from working with his father, and that Lowe’s “work ethic” is something he’s paid attention to.

“And I’ve also learned to take my hair very seriously,” the actor joked.

He says Lowe is a “really good father”

Despite the online jokes and teasing, John Owen still gets sentimental when he talks about how much his father means to him.

In January 2022, John Owen told PEOPLE how much he looks up to Lowe and admires his strong character.

“When you think about what he’s been through in his 20s, his meteoric rise and some turbulence, and his decades of public service… That he’s emerged as a family man, a very, very good father, a very, very strong husband and just a nice, nice guy to be around, that’s the example he sets in his everyday life,” John Owen said.
