Royals claim big win over Baycats with two grand slams

Guelph defeated Barrie 15-3 last night; Baycats return to action tonight at Vintage Throne Stadium against the Welland Jackfish

GUELPH – The Guelph Royals had five home runs, including two grand slams, in a 15-3 win over the Barrie Baycats during Intercounty Baseball League play on Wednesday.

After the Baycats took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Frankin Torres responded with a solo home run. Brando Leroux hit a grand slam before JD Williams’ solo home run in the fourth lifted the Royals into sixth place.

Carson Burns added a solo homer in the fifth, while his teammates added two more in the sixth. Andy Leader closed the night with the Royals’ second grand slam.

Ryan Rijo hit a solo homerun for the Baycats.

Yuki Narita pitched six innings to earn the win in an eight-strikeout effort. Braedan Pakkala took the loss.

The Royals are now 18-12 and will take on the Kitchener Panthers on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The Baycats are now 21-11 and will hope to get back on track on Thursday against the Welland Jackfish at home.

Jackfish Takes Huge Majors Win

LONDON – The Welland Jackfish scored nine runs in the fourth inning to beat the London Majors 18-0 in an Intercounty Baseball League road game Wednesday night.

Robert Mullen ended the big inning with a homerun, while Gianfranco Morello doubled to also drive in two runs.

The Jackfish continued to score in the fifth inning, adding three before Morello hit a two-run blast. They added four more runs in the eighth for good measure.

Teodoro Ortega was credited with the win. He pitched five innings and struck out seven, allowing only three hits. Jonathan Henry suffered the loss.

The Jackfish are now 25-7 and visit the Barrie Baycats on Thursday at 7:35 p.m. The Majors fall to 18-12 and look to get back on track on the road against the Hamilton Cardinals on Friday at 7:35 p.m.

Cardinals soar past Maple Leafs

HAMILTON – Andrew Johnston hit his second and third home runs of the season to help the Hamilton Cardinals to an 18-5 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in Intercounty Baseball League play on Wednesday.

Luis Bernardo led off with a solo home run in the first inning, before hitting three more in the second. Andrew Johnston and Tyler Duncan drove in two runs in the third inning, giving the Cardinals more room to move.

The Maple Leafs attempted a comeback in the seventh inning by scoring five runs, led by Dionysius Chialtas’ three-run homerun.

Takaki Eguchi earned the win on the mound, striking out four in six innings, while Landon Leach suffered the loss.

The Cardinals improve to 15-9 and host the London Majors on Thursday at 7:35 p.m. The Maple Leafs lose to 12-22 and visit the Chatham-Kent Barnstormers on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
