Sawyer Mynio & Canada lose opening match at 2024 World Junior Summer Showcase

Despite tying the game late in the third period, Team Canada lost 3–2 in a shootout to Team Sweden at the 2024 World Junior Summer Showcase. Of the three Vancouver Canucks prospects eligible to play, only defenceman Sawyer Mynio played for Team Canada, while Melvin Fernström was a scratch for Team Sweden. Anthony Romani is also on Team Canada’s roster for the event, but was assigned to Team White, which will play Finland in Canada’s next game.

As for Mynio, he was paired with Calgary Flames prospect Zayne Parekh against Sweden. Mynio was coming off a two-point performance as he helped Team Canada Red defeat Team Canada White on Tuesday. While Mynio won’t play on Friday, he could be in the lineup on Saturday when Canada plays Team USA to close out their tournament.

As for Fernström, his next opportunity could also come Friday when Sweden takes on Team USA. Fernström has already faced Team USA twice in this tournament, recording a power-play assist and four penalty minutes. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT, following Team Canada’s game against Finland, which starts at 10 a.m. PT.
