Canada loses 19-15 to Germany for first loss in 3×3 women’s basketball

PARIS — Canada fell 2-1 in the Olympic 3×3 women’s basketball tournament after losing 19-15 to Germany on Thursday.

The Canadians played much of the game behind the curve after Germany took 6-0 and 7-1 leads in the opening minutes.

Canada then went on a run to tie the game at 7-7, with a shot from Kacie Bosch as the highlight. The teams traded leads and with 3:44 to go, the score was 10-10.

Then the Germans pulled again and made a 9-2 run in the final minutes. With 31 seconds left on the clock the score was 19-12. The Canadians could not win the game anymore.

Canada didn’t shoot as well as Germany in the matchup, with the Canadians hitting 53 percent of their 1-point shots and 25 percent of their 2-pointers. Meanwhile, Germany hit 67 percent of their 1-point shots and 57 percent of their 2-point attempts.

The Canadian team was led by Edmonton twin sisters Michelle and Katherine Plouffe, who each scored five points. Germany was led by Sonja Greinacher with eight points and Elisa Mevius with seven.

Canada plays Spain on Friday.
