St. John students learn how to protect a watershed | Island Life

Miller-Smith and communications specialist Kaitlyn Cummings visited the Boys and Girls Club summer camp at Julius E. Sprauve School on July 15 to share information about how to protect the local flood defenses.

Thirteen students explored a LEGO watershed model, watched a video describing the journey of a raindrop through a watershed, created their own watersheds, and completed workbooks.

According to the CBCC, a watershed is more than just the action of water flowing over land; it is the land that lies within the “Ridge to Reef” area, including the resources, culture, and people who live there.

Miller-Smith also returned on July 19 to donate 21 backpacks to the Boys and Girls Club.

In addition to their educational programming, CBCC’s 2024 projects include Coastal Resilience Planning to protect and improve community infrastructure and ecosystems, and the Stormwater Structure “Toolkit” to help neighborhoods maintain their stormwater structures to protect the Coral Bay watershed.

All projects aim to improve the overall resilience of Coral Bay and St. John’s to climate change by preparing youth for future environmental initiatives, planning for resilient infrastructure, and creating sustainable neighborhood maintenance practices.

Each year there are more hurricane seasons, raising concerns about the island’s infrastructure and its resilience to major storms, the press release said.

With an emphasis on resilience to climate change, CBCC works to prepare natural resources to protect watersheds in the region and the people who live there.
