Galway four-piece Back to Winnipeg released Sound of Rain last week – a melodic, shoegaze lullaby punctuated by a hugely catchy, stabbing chorus. It’s the group’s third single of the year, and each one revolves around a different songwriter. In this case, drummer Donncha Adams was the orchestrator. Alongside them, Back to Winnipeg is made up of Eoghan (Fitzy) Barrett, Cian Moran and Liam Moran.

The fluid approach to their songwriting has allowed the band to develop a dynamic sound, with varied vocals and different styles given space to shine. Sound of Rain came at a time of introspection.

“I remember one evening it was pouring with rain and there was quite a thunderstorm,” says Donncha.

“I was just sitting there, messing around on the guitar. And it’s just that sense of the craziness that’s happening around you and then being in it and just being creative and observing. I made the music and then I brought it to the guys.

“And then they built the lyrics around it, capturing that feeling, which was really cool. But I didn’t really have to say much about it – they just got it and it was perfect for what I had in mind.”

“I definitely think the vibe was so clear from the music,” Fitzy adds. “And then it was just a matter of, okay, fill in the blanks here. We kind of knew what the idea was going to be. And so yeah, I think I remember us getting together pretty quickly.”

While there is always a main songwriter on a Back to Winnipeg song, that person will usually present an idea or instrumental line that others can build upon. For Sound of Rain, however, Donncha had a very clear idea of how they wanted it to sound.

“It’s like we’re forced to try something different,” Fitzy says. “Instead of just staying in our comfort zone… It was the first time we did that, where it was like no – there’s not a lot of movement here. This is what the song is; you play it this way.”
