Driver speeding 71 mph arrested in Hamilton County

HAMILTON COUNTY, Kan. (KWCH) – The Kansas Highway Patrol and local agencies across the state continue to work hard to crack down on speeding and highlight the dangers of reckless driving. Not everyone is getting the message. On Wednesday, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office shared an image of one of the most egregious cases of speeding. The sheriff’s office shared an image of a traffic stop on K-27 showing the driver traveling 136 mph in a 65 mph zone.

“Please slow down even if you are late for work,” the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a post with a photo of the traffic stop on its Facebook page. The stop took place Wednesday morning on southbound K-27.

On July 22, law enforcement agencies across the state launched a statewide campaign to crack down on speeding. The statewide campaign, “Speeding Wrecks Lives,” comes after the Kansas Highway Patrol urged lawmakers to seek tougher penalties for speeding earlier this year.

Last week, KHP reported that since 2020 more than 12,000 tickets issued to drivers exceeding 100 miles per hour.
