Edmonton Police Say Overall Crime Is Down

According to the police, there has been a decrease in crime in the capital.

Edmonton police reported Wednesday that police-reported crimes fell 11 per cent in 2023.

By comparison, national growth in the same period was three percent.

According to EPS, Edmonton’s decline last year was one of the largest among Canadian major cities.

According to Ron Anderson, Chief Innovation and Technology Officer at EPS, initiatives aimed at combating theft and social disorder are partly responsible for the decline in crime.

Examples include the community accelerator program, the safer public spaces initiative and the new provincial navigation center.

Although crime declined, the severity of violent crime in Edmonton increased by four per cent in 2023.

“Make no mistake, violent crime remains a major problem in our city,” Anderson said.

“While we still have hard work to do to combat crime, we are already starting to see tangible results from some of our targeted initiatives.”
