New principal appointed at South Laurel Middle School

July 31 – Laurel County Public Schools recently announced Regina Bishop as the new principal of South Laurel Middle School.

Bishop began her new duties on Friday, July 5 — having previously served as assistant principal for SLMS. In that role, she received the Principal Excellence in Leadership Award from the Kentucky Association of Professional Educators.

Bishop is a proud graduate of Laurel County Schools. After high school, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Teaching Mathematics and a Master’s degree in Mathematics Education from Eastern Kentucky University.

She has 28 years of teaching experience that prepares her for the role of school principal, including roles as a math teacher, curriculum coach, and administrator.

In the press release shared by SLMS, Bishop stated, “South Laurel Middle School is a premier school. The tradition of excellence at SLMS is recognized throughout the state. The passion and dedication to students is unmatched. I look forward to continuing to work with the students, staff, parents and our community to continue this legacy. Our goal is for every child to feel loved, valued and supported in their educational endeavors and to become lifelong learners.”

South Laurel Middle School is one of two middle schools in Laurel County and has an enrollment of nearly 1,000 students.

In the 2022-2023 state assessment, the school was awarded the ‘Green’ rating for good performance.
