Four teams from the region in the top 20 of the CalPreps pre-season CIF-SS rankings – Press Telegram

For the third straight season, CalPreps.com rankings will be used to determine the CIF Southern Section playoff pools at the end of the regular season.

The playoffs are still months away. However, it’s always interesting to see where the 28 teams in the Press-Telegram area are ranked by CalPreps before the season begins in late August.

St. John Bosco, which won the Trinity League last season and finished second in Division 1, begins the season No. 2 in the CIF-SS rankings, behind No. 1 Mater Dei. Los Alamitos is No. 9, Warren is No. 16 and Long Beach Poly is No. 20.

CalPreps rankings are used to determine playoff divisions once the regular season ends. The computer-based system rates and ranks teams based on wins and losses during the season and strength of schedule.

Teams can earn automatic playoff berths through league standings. Teams can also earn at-large bids based on their CalPreps ranking and the team’s overall record if additional teams are needed to fill a playoff division.

Zero is the initial rating for all teams. At that point, the strength of a team’s schedule is combined with preseason expectations to produce an initial rating above or below zero.

CalPreps ratings change weekly, as data is entered individually on a game-by-game basis. Ratings are also calculated in part based on a team’s margin of victory.

Last season, a pool of eight teams was selected for Division 1 and a pool of sixteen teams for Divisions 2 to 14.

Mayfair (Division 7) and Cerritos (Division 12) were the area teams that won the CIF-SS soccer title last season.

St. John Bosco (Division 1), Warren (Division 3) and Lynwood (Division 14) finished second in their respective divisions.
