Henrik Rummel’s noticeable bump while receiving the bronze medal at the Olympics caused quite a stir. His wife, Abra Amwake, however, didn’t seem particularly bothered by it.

The Danish-born American athlete won the medal in the coxless fours event at the London 2012 Olympic Games, along with teammates Scott Gault, Charles Cole and Glenn Ochal. Rummel, then 24, stood with his colleagues during the medal ceremony.

While the team proudly held their bouquets and smiled broadly, it was Rummel’s shorts that attracted massive attention. His incredibly tight shorts appeared to highlight an apparent erection, leading to widespread speculation on social media – much to the dismay of his wife. Speaking to Cosmopolitan, Rummel admitted that his wife didn’t quite see the same sense of humour in his public wardrobe malfunction, the Mirror reports.

“I took it kind of tongue-in-cheek and I thought it was hilarious, but my wife didn’t like it,” he revealed. “She didn’t like that everyone was talking about that and not the fact that I won a medal at the Olympics. And the same goes for my parents, they couldn’t avoid it at the time and I’m not happy that they had to go through it.”

Rummel felt compelled to respond to a viral Reddit post claiming, “American rower was particularly excited about his bronze medal,” which garnered nearly 1,000 comments at the time. The Olympic rower himself jumped into the fray, vehemently denying any insinuations about his physical condition during the ceremony.

Under the name Rummelator, he clarified on Reddit: “This is me and I swear it’s not standing up! I don’t know why it’s in that position but that’s how it is.” The athlete, who first made a splash in the sporting world with a medal in 2012, returned to the Olympics in Brazil in 2016, although he and his teammates could only finish seventh in the coxless four for the US.

According to his LinkedIn page, Rummel has since retired from his athletic career and is currently a senior vice president at Store Capital, which according to its website is “one of the largest and fastest growing net lease REITs in the country.”
