Hamilton County unveils improvements to Ben Miller Park, enhancing local recreation

Hamilton County Parks & Recreation officially cut the ribbon on Saturday for the renovation of Ben Miller Park.

“From McDonald Farm in Sale Creek to the world-class Walden’s Ridge Park on Signal Mountain, Ben Miller Park is the latest example of how the county is investing in recreational experiences unique to our neighborhoods,” said Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp. “We’ve enhanced Ben Miller Park to better connect the surrounding communities and bring everyone from seniors to young families together. I’m grateful to Commissioner Joe Graham for making this a priority and to our Parks Director, Matt Folz, for working with the City of Chattanooga to make it a reality.”

It is a community park at the base of Lookout Mountain that connects the St. Elmo and Alton Park neighborhoods.

“With these renovations, Hamilton County continues its commitment to improving our neighborhood parks,” said Parks & Recreation Director Matt Folz. “This park is the perfect location to enjoy a fun-filled sporting activity with friends and family, and we encourage citizens to take advantage of this special asset in South Chattanooga.”

It is located next to the former Lookout Junior High School.

“We can do great things in Chattanooga when we work together, and this is just the latest success story for County-City partnerships,” said Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly. “I want to thank Councilman Dotley, Commissioner Graham and all of our friends at the County for making this possible. City parks are critical to the quality of life in Chattanooga. Parks bring people together like few other things, to play, relax, exercise and host events, creating a stronger sense of community.”

The park is named after the late Hamilton County Commissioner Ben Miller, who served on the board from 1986 to 2004.

“I am pleased that residents of St. Elmo and Alton Park will have access to this newly renovated community park, which offers some of the best outdoor sports fields in the area,” said Commissioner Joe Graham, who represents District 11. “I am grateful to Councilmember Dotley for her dedication to supporting this project on behalf of the city and seeing it through to completion.”

The renovations included major improvements to the outdoor basketball and tennis courts, the installation of a brand new pickleball court, the addition of a dog park and swing set, and a newly paved walking path.

Behind the old school is also a baseball field, playground and outdoor fitness equipment.

“When there is an opportunity to enhance recreational experiences in a community, we should take advantage of it,” said Councilmember Raquetta Dotley, who represents District 7 in Chattanooga. “I am confident that the residents of Alton Park and St. Elmo will not only take advantage of these renovated courses, but will create cherished memories with family and friends as we continue to build stronger communities.”
