Jasper the Bear Statue Survives Jasper Forest Fire

Images from the town of Jasper paint a picture of what’s left standing and what’s gone after the wildfire ravaged the community on July 24.

According to Parks Canada, 358 of the city’s 1,113 structures have been destroyed.

Officials said all critical infrastructure has been saved.

The list below is not exhaustive.

Maligne Lodge

Maligne Lodge is named after a lake, river and gorge in Jasper National Park and has been owned by the Decore family since 1961.

The lodge is located on Connaught Drive, Jasper’s main street.

A photo of the lodge destroyed by flames was one of the first images to surface on social media the night of the fire.

It was destroyed by the flames.

“I was just shocked,” Karyn Decore told CTV News Channel on July 25.

“I know that the Jasper community is a very strong and resilient community and that everyone will come together to rebuild the city and make it even better than it was. I know that people want to do that.”

She promised: “As soon as we get the green light, we will start working to rebuild our hotel.”

Mountain Robson Inn

Next to Maligne Lodge is Mount Robson Inn.

The mountain is named after Mount Robson in British Columbia, the highest point in the Canadian Rockies.

Video footage shows the hotel destroyed.

Petro Canada

As the fire raged on July 24, rumors circulated on social media that the Petro-Canada on southwest Connaught Drive had exploded.

Although these rumors remain unconfirmed, video footage captured in the media shows the gas station destroyed.

For many years, the gas station was the last stop for travelers leaving the city.

The Esso on Connaught Drive was also destroyed by the fire.

Jasper Anglican Church

The origin of the municipality dates back to 1913.

The building that burned down was built in 1928 and was based on a blueprint for a 14th century English Gothic church, according to the church.

It was built by an Edmonton builder using local materials.

The Edith Cavell Memorial Tower was added in 1932.

It was located on the corner of Geikie Street and Miette Avenue.

L&W restaurant

The L&W Restaurant on the corner of Patricia Street and Hazel Avenue has been destroyed, according to photos from a media tour on July 27.

Jasper the Bear

The city’s iconic mascot can be seen untouched in a photo posted by Parks Canada on July 27.

Jasper was created in 1948 by artist James Simpkins for the National Film Board to highlight the importance of protecting Canada’s flora and fauna, the city said.

The original cartoons appeared in MacLean’s Magazine.

The statue is located on Patricia Street.

The Royal Canadian Legion Division 31

This photo from the Jasper Legion was posted on social media with the following caption: “We received this photo from one of our members from the Jasper Fire Department. They are such a big part of our hearts right now. One of our employees, also a firefighter, had keys to the flagpole and had the flag flown at half-mast for our city and all those who have lost so much.” (Source: Jasper Royal Canadian Legion Branch 31)

On July 26, the legion posted a photo on social media showing the Geikie Street building still standing.

“We received this photo from one of our Jasper Fire Department members. They are such a big part of our hearts right now.”

The statement continued: “One of our employees, also a firefighter, had keys to the flagpole and flew the flag at half-mast for our city and all who have lost so much.”

Municipal Library Jasper

Athabasca Hotel

The Athabasca Hotel on Patricia Street was not damaged by the fire.

The building, which dates from the 1910s, is an icon of the cityscape.

Seton-Jasper Healthcare Center

According to Parks Canada, the medical centre on Robson Street in Jasper was undamaged.

Jasper Emergency Services Building

Parks Canada reports that the building housing the Jasper Fire Department on Geikie Street sustained no damage.

École Desrochers and Jasper Junior/Secondary schools

The city’s high schools on Elm Avenue are untouched, according to a photo posted by Parks Canada.

Jasper Elementary on Elm Avenue is also safe.

Jasper Museum

The museum on Bonhomme Street does not appear to have been damaged by fire, according to a photo shared by Parks Canada.

Alpine Summit Senior Lodge

According to a photo posted by Parks Canada on July 27, the seniors residence on Turret Street was not damaged in the fire.

Jasper Fitness and Aquatic Center

The activity center at the Jasper Fitness and Aquatic Center on Bonhomme Street sustained no damage.

Jasper Baptist Church

According to a photo from Parks Canada, the Baptist Church on Pyramid Lake Road has been saved.

The land was purchased by the church from Jasper Cumberland Presbyterian in 1909.

The church says a Presbyterian building on that property previously burned down.

Patricia Street and Pyramid Lake Road

According to a July 26 photo from Parks Canada, several buildings on Patricia Street and Pyramid Lake Road were not damaged.

Jasper Park Lodge

A July 26 memo from Fairmont to employees reveals that four buildings were destroyed at the iconic mountain lodge, which is located immediately east of town in Jasper National Park.

“We are aware that two hotel accommodation buildings burned, including Milligan Manor and a Beauvert Suite,” the memo said. “Several hotel buildings (operational) also burned: the engineering and golf maintenance hangars,” the memo said.

“There is some damage to employee housing. We are working to verify this information and will first contact those who may have lost items.”

Marmot basin

The status of the Marmot Basin alpine ski area is unknown. The following update was posted to the resort’s social media on July 26:

“At this time, we are still assessing what damage, if any, the mountain has sustained. We are working with our partners at Parks Canada to better understand the status of our mountain.”

Management added: “Recent maps indicate the remainder of the fire is under our leasehold. We will provide updates as information becomes available.”
