The weather in the UK is finally giving us the summer we’ve been hoping for as a minor heatwave continues to ravage the country.

London is expected to hit 27°C today, a welcome change from the gloomy and stormy weather we have had so far in June and July.

The latest weather forecast from the Met Office is good news for anyone on a summer holiday in the UK.

Although Sunday morning is likely to start with patches of fog, the fog is expected to clear quickly, with the Met Office saying we will then have a ‘fine day with extended periods of sunshine’.

The forecast for Greater London adds: ‘Feeling warmer than Saturday and also more humid. Light winds. Maximum temperature 27°C.’

Moreover, that mini heat wave is likely to continue into early next week, although meteorologists warn that this will result in very humid weather, especially tonight.

In the United Kingdom, a heatwave is defined as a location experiencing at least three consecutive days when the daily maximum temperature reaches or exceeds the heatwave threshold.

The limit value varies from country to country. In the UK, the temperature is 25°C in most countries, while in London and the southern and eastern areas the limit value is 27°C or 28°C.

David Hayter, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: ‘As the weekend progresses, the jet stream to the west of the UK will weaken, creating an area of high pressure that will slowly move across the UK.

‘High pressure means that air sinks higher in the atmosphere, which creates drier, more stable and sunnier weather.

‘Temperatures will also rise, and will be well above average. We could see highs of 27°C in the south and 25°C in the northeast by Sunday.’

London and the South East are expected to see the best weather this weekend and early next week.

“There will be a bit more cloud in Northern Ireland, the south and west of Scotland and the Northern Isles, so temperatures will be lower there,” David added.

And it looks like the heat won’t last long. The Met Office predicts that things will start to cool down from mid-week, with the chance of thunderstorms.
