James McClean appears to be subtly reacting to the incident with Levi Colwill in the pre-season match between Chelsea and Wrexham

Wrexham star James McClean appeared to take a subtle dig at Chelsea’s Levi Colwill after their on-field brawl during a pre-season friendly.

The match was essentially a friendly affair as the veteran Irishman and the young Blues defender came to blows within minutes of kick-off in their encounter at Levi’s Stadium, home of NFL side San Francisco 49ers.

England international Colwill responded to an early McClean attack by having the pair stand shoulder to shoulder without the ball.

That led to a minor commotion, with Colwill grabbing McClean by the shirt and the two clashing in midfield with just 122 seconds left on the clock.

The situation became even more serious when players from both teams and even Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson got involved after he sprinted out of the technical area.

After the scenes were over, neither player was shown yellow cards and the two British clubs shared the spoils, with League One Wrexham holding the Premier League giants across the pond to a 2-2 draw.

Christopher Nkunku opened the scoring for Chelsea in the first half, with goals from Luke Bolton and Jack Marriott putting the North Wales club ahead. However, the Blues needed a late equaliser from Lesley Ugochukwu to salvage a draw.

But McClean couldn’t resist taking a saucy dig at rivals Chelsea in a social media post the day after the match.

The former Wigan and Stoke star posted a selfie from Sugarrays boxing gym in Vancouver, writing: “No pushing or shoving here, just fighting.”

Wrexham are currently on their second pre-season tour of the United States since taking over the film from Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds and Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator Rob McElhenney.

The Welsh outfit, dubbed the ‘Wrex Coast Tour’, will celebrate their successful campaign with friendly matches in Santa Barbara, San Francisco and Los Angeles in the United States.

They also take a trip north across the border to Vancouver, Canada, Reynolds’ hometown.

The club’s women’s team will also play a series of matches in LA and Portland.

Wrexham have had a decent pre-season so far, with a 5-1 win over non-league side Hanley Town, followed by a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth and a 2-2 draw with Chelsea in California.

On Sunday they play Major League Soccer club Vancouver Whitecaps in Canada, before returning home on August 3 to host Fleetwood Town at the Racecourse Ground.

Parkinson’s men begin their League One campaign on August 10 against Wycombe as Wrexham look to consolidate their position in the third tier of English football.

Or, who knows, maybe three consecutive promotions to reach the championship.
