Derek Chisora beats Joe Joyce to make unlikely retirement claim after Farage hug | Boxing | Sport

Derek Chisora put on a showstopper performance to defeat Joe Joyce in style and win his final professional fight at the O2 Arena. In front of a star-studded crowd that included the likes of Nigel Farage and Oleksandr Usyk, Chisora rolled back the years to stun Joyce and most likely retire in style.

Speed was not a factor for either fighter on Saturday night, with the British pair looking slow and sluggish from the outset. Both men seemed more interested in throwing bombs than boxing and moving around the ring from the outset.

Despite entering the fight as the heavy underdog, Chisora got the upper hand in the early exchanges and seemed to find a rhythm with the straight right hand, which he threw at will and connected with almost every time. If it weren’t for Joyce’s granite chin, the fight might have been over before round five, such was Chisora’s success.

Chisora’s most significant success came in round nine, when he found Joyce with a perfect shot, sending him crashing to the canvas. Chisora timed his shot perfectly, with Joyce coming towards him, before stepping back and unleashing a straight right hand right on his opponent’s chin.

Chisora continued to hurt Joyce in the final round and was not afraid to get on his bike and jog away from the now desperate Joyce. Both men threw their arms up at the end of the fight – Joyce perhaps with some kind of fake confidence – before the scorecards were read to confirm the unanimous decision win for ‘War’ Chisora.

After a quick hug with his friends Farage and Usyk, Chisora surprised everyone by confirming that he would not be leaving the sport just yet, as he claimed that he had two more fights. There had been some confusion over his future in the sport, as he had stated that this would be his last fight at the O2 Arena in London, having fought there nine times during his career.

Chisora told TNT Sports: “I love you London. I’ll tell you what, it wasn’t good there. I had to dig deep. Joe’s a good fighter but I knew I was going to drop him at some point. I signed with Frank Warren and we went to York Hall, I think it’s a good time to end my career with the man I started with. Thanks Frank.”

“I’ve got two fights left, I’m not retiring tonight, but this was my last fight in London. I’m going to Manchester before the end of the year.” In an awkward moment for TNT Sports, Chisora jokingly asked Joyce to come backstage and smoke marijuana with him, which was quickly brushed off by Joyce, who confirmed he would not be retiring despite losing his last two fights on the spin.
