SIU investigating after teen ATV driver injured in collision with TPS cruiser

The province’s police watchdog is investigating after the 13-year-old driver of an ATV was injured in a collision with a police car in North York late Monday night.

According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which has now invoked its mandate, Toronto police officers observed an ATV “of interest” in North York at around 10:30 p.m.

A police car and an SUV collided shortly afterward near Jane Street and Giltspur Drive, south of Sheppard Avenue West, police said.

The SIU confirmed the 13-year-old driver of the ATV had to be extricated from the vehicle and was taken to hospital for treatment, paramedics said earlier.

A 12-year-old passenger on the ATV fled after the accident but was later found.

Although the 13-year-old’s injuries were previously described as serious, the SIU reported that neither teen suffered serious injuries.

Police have not released any information about the circumstances leading up to the collision or why officers were looking for the ATV.

According to the SIU, two detectives and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent body that investigates any incident involving police and members of the public that results in death, serious injury or allegations of sexual abuse.
