Dozens of traffic tickets issued in Barrhaven, Orleans: Ottawa police

Ottawa Police Service (OPS) officers filed 59 charges over two nights last weekend in Barrhaven and Orleans.

The Residents Matter Enforcement Initiative is a nighttime traffic unit that ensures safety in communities. Officers were in Barrhaven on July 19 and in Orléans on July 20.

“Some of the speeds we see on our roads are shocking. Not only are their lives at risk, but they are putting the lives of all other road users at risk,” Cst. Phil Kane of the Ottawa Police Traffic Escort & Enforcement Unit said in a news release. “The streets are no place for this reckless and foolish behavior.”

Unit members issued 41 provincial violation citations during the Barrhaven blitz, including 16 for speeding and seven for improper or no mufflers. Five drivers were cited for stunt driving/street racing, according to the initiative’s findings.

Drivers were caught speeding on many roads in Barrhaven, including:

  • 125 km/h in a 70 km/h zone – Strandherd Drive / Aura Avenue
  • 112 km/h in a 70 km/h zone – Strandherd Drive / Chapman Mills Drive
  • 126 km/h in a 70 km/h zone – Strandherd Drive / Claridge Drive
  • 141 km/h in a 80 km/h zone – Limebank Road / Tom Roberts Road

Police said a motorcyclist was caught speeding 113 mph at 45 mph on Strandherd Drive near Kennevale Drive. In addition to a stunt driving charge, the driver was charged with reckless driving, driving while suspended, no motorcycle license, using improper license plates for the vehicle and no insurance.

In east Ottawa, authorities issued 18 provincial violations, including two for speeding, two for failing to display two license plates and five for improper window tinting.

Three drivers were charged with stunt driving/street racing:

  • 141 km/h in a 80 km/h zone – Innes Road / Anderson Road
  • 150 km/h in a 60 km/h zone – Trim Road / Portobello Boulevard
  • 138 km/h in an 80 km/h zone – Highway 174 / Jeanne d’Arc Boulevard

The driver who was fined for driving 150 km/h in a 60 km/h zone was also charged with two offences of the Criminal Code for dangerous driving of a motor vehicle and driving under the influence for being more than twice the legal limit.

“If convicted, a violation of the law could result in a minimum fine of $2,000, six demerit points, a possible six months in jail and a further one-year driving disqualification,” authorities said.
