Park(ing) Day, an annual global public art project that transforms parking lots into temporary parks and social spaces for one day, is making a comeback in September.

Taking place from September 20 to 22, 2024, the project involves people around the world repurposing street parking spaces, boulevards and parking lots, transforming them into small parks and spaces for art, design, play and activism.

Park(ing) day began in 2005 as a design activism project by design studio Rebar, transforming a single parking lot in San Francisco. It has since grown into a global movement with hundreds of installations in over 35 cities worldwide.

Park(ing) Day provides an opportunity to engage in an ongoing conversation about the design and construction of cities. It also highlights the need to improve the accessibility and quantity of public spaces in densely populated urban areas. At the same time, it highlights the importance of these spaces for social and ecological interactions.

Park(ing) Day Toronto, organized locally by Dubbeldam Architecture + Design, will feature installations across the city, including at Dubbeldam’s offices, where they will transform boulevard and street parking spaces into places for people to gather.

This year, in collaboration with SvN Architects + Planners, Arup Canada, DTAHAnd MASSIVartthey have created a grant program to encourage more activations in the city. The program offers grants of up to $500 for eligible activations organized by nonprofits, local community groups, and individuals.
