On lap 63 of 70 at the Hungaroring, Verstappen attempted to brake past Hamilton for third place, having tried to “save” himself after Red Bull’s strategy had dropped him to fifth late in the race.

However, he braked incorrectly, locked up and collided with Hamilton’s left front hand, sending the RB20 flying into the air.

An investigation was launched into the incident, which was believed to have caused a collision, but the stewards decided to take no further action. Verstappen finished fifth.

In their verdict, the stewards concluded that “the driver of car 44 (Hamilton) could have done more to avoid the collision.”
