The Weyburn Beavers returned to action Monday night following the WCBL All-Star Game with a doubleheader in Saskatoon. The Beavers would start on the wrong side of the scoreboard in the opening game of the day, losing 5-3, but bounced back in the second game with a 7-3 victory.

In the first game, which started just before 5 p.m., the Berries opened with a run in the first and added three more in the fourth to hold on to the win. Weyburn scored a run in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 1-1 and added runs in the 8th and 9th innings before the rally was broken up.

Niko Kekatos would go 2-for-4 at the plate in the game, extending his streak of reaching base on a hit or walk to 14 games. Dallas Cummins, Ryan Dauphinee, Ryan Muizelaar, Halen Otte, Carter Schellsmidt, Nick Teng and River Smith also collected hits, with Smith’s double. Dauphinee, Smith and Brayden Mayencourt each drove in a run.

On the mound, Ian Heck got the start and pitched two innings, allowing one earned run on four hits. Brett Paterson pitched five innings in relief, allowing four earned runs and seven hits. Mathieu Rocheleau finished the game on the mound.

The second game of the night saw the Beavers start with three runs in the first inning, and they would run away and hold on to take a 7-3 victory. The Beavers would add two more runs in the 5th and two more in the 6th. Saskatoon would get a run across the plate in the 1st, 4th and 6th inning.

Kekatos had a double in the game to extend his streak to 15 games, while also driving in a run. Easton Mould had two RBIs, as did Robert Gurney. Dauphinee and Otte also had RBIs in the win. Dauphinee, Otte and Gurney also had two hits in the game, with Gurney driving in a double.

Angel Fragozo got the start on the mound, pitching five innings. He would give up three earned runs on six hits and strike out five. Devin Costa pitched one inning, as did Joe Hart, and both kept the Berries bats in check.

The Beavers now prepare to face the Okotoks Dawgs, who play two games in two nights at Tom Laing starting Tuesday. Weyburn will be looking for success against one of the top teams in the WCBL as they try to keep their playoff chances alive. The magic number for the Moose Jaw Miller Express to eliminate the Beavers is four, with 14 games remaining for the Beavers and 12 for Moose Jaw.
