Australian state unveils major change to driving licence

Thousands of drivers in a Victorian city are set to trial a major change to the state’s driver licensing system.

Ballarat residents will soon be able to drive with a digital driving licence as part of a regional trial before the technology is rolled out statewide.

The Victorian Government has confirmed that all drivers will be able to have a digital version of their driving licence on their phone from 2024.

A six-month trial of the technology will begin in Ballarat in July for full licence holders, before being rolled out statewide. Drivers with L and P plates will still need to carry their physical licence at all times.

The digital driving licence immediately shows whether it has been revoked or suspended, but it can still be used as proof of identity.

Police, companies and other authorities can verify its authenticity via a time-limited QR code.

“We know Victorians want digital driver licences and this trial is a significant step before wider rollout,” said Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne.

“A digital driver’s licence makes it easier and more convenient for motorists in Victoria and helps businesses and authorities verify identity with minimal time and hassle.”

Minister for Public Services Danny Pearson described the new licences as “world-class technology”.

Drivers can still choose to use their physical driver’s license.

South Australia introduced digital driver’s licenses in late 2017, and New South Wales followed in October 2019.
