Deer wanders into a bar in Halifax

Pedestrians in Halifax were treated to an unexpected sight Thursday evening when they spotted a deer in the city centre.

The confused animal appeared at the convention center and threw itself against the glass several times before entering the Economy Shoe Shop, an iconic local bar.

“We had the doors to the basement open because we were going to do a comedy show, and while those doors were open, it panicked and ran into the basement,” said waitress Robyn Morrow.

“(I) just saw a deer fly by the door. It kind of freaked us out,” said bar patron Chip Anstey. “I think the people I’m with thought I had way too much tequila!”

Officers from the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources and Renewables (DNRR) arrived on the scene around 9 p.m. and tranquilized a deer in the basement of the shoe store before removing it from the bar.

According to DNRR, they also discovered a deer in the fenced area around Province House around the same time.

“Staff were able to tranquilize both deer and safely relocate them to a more suitable location where they were released,” Erin Lynch, DNRR communications officer, wrote in an email to CTV Atlantic.

“We are grateful to our employees who worked on this situation until 2 a.m. to ensure a successful outcome.”
