Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan reveals details of investigation into construction sector after CFMEU layoffs

Premier Jacinta Allan has revealed details of an independent inquiry into Victoria’s construction industry, promising to root out a “rotten culture” in parts of the sector.

It comes from the back of a new revelations spread by Nine newspapers It was announced today that more than 20 members of the CFMEU have been sacked by the state branch following allegations that the union had been infiltrated by criminal figures.

The aim of the research is to identify gaps in the current powers of government agencies so that they can respond to allegations of criminal behaviour in the construction sector.

It will also be elaborated how whistleblowers can be properly protected.

Greg Wilson, a longtime senior government official and the Department of Justice and Regulatory Affairs, will lead the investigation.

Allan said it would take too long for a royal commission into the CFMEU to produce results, as he had opted for a review.

However, the opposition claimed that this was because the findings would be announced around the 2026 state elections.

β€œTo claim that Jacinta Allan was unaware of what was going on on construction sites in Victoria is like cigarette company executives in the 1960s and 1970s claiming they were unaware cigarettes were dangerous,” said Liberal Party MP Evan Mulholland.

“Give me a chance.”

The interim report of the investigation will be submitted to the government in August and the final report is due by the end of November.
