This summer, Toronto is hosting a pay-what-you-want farmers market

As Canadians grapple with rising food costs, a new farmers market in Toronto is adopting the Pay-What-You-Choose (PWYC) model. The model aims to promote affordability by ensuring that all customers have access to healthy food, regardless of their financial situation.

At Dixon Hall’s Our Fair Share Farmers’ Market, customers can pay whatever amount they can afford for fresh produce, from a minimum of $5 up to a market price of $20 or any amount in between.

“Customers who can afford to pay more are encouraged to do so, thereby covering the costs for others who may be able to pay less,” the organizers told blogTO.

“The goal is to create a fairer and more just food system, where everyone gets their fair share of fresh produce.”

The markets, which take place every two weeks from August 15, offer a surprising range of pre-selected products, along with live music, family activities, hot meals, refreshments and free resources to learn more about healthy eating.

Customers can also donate to someone else’s basket. All proceeds from the market go toward paying for the food.

“A PWYC pricing model is the foundation for a fairer and more equitable food system, where we all get our fair share,” Dixon Hall’s website states.

The market will take place on August 15, August 29, September 12 and September 26 from 3:00 pm until the products are sold out. The events will be held outdoors at 190 Carlton St. and indoors at 188 Carlton St. in case of inclement weather.
