Gareth Southgate has led the Three Lions to a second successive European Championship final and a first continental title is again within reach.

But they are not favourites to beat Spain, the tournament’s top scorer.

Luis de la Fuente’s side fell behind early on at the Allianz Arena after Kylian Mbappé set up Randal Kolo Muani for Les Bleus’ first goal from open play at the European Championship. However, that lead was quickly cancelled out by a wonder goal from 16-year-old Lamine Yamal and another brilliant strike from Dani Olmo.

The competition will take place at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

Spain will receive a double reinforcement in defence for Sunday’s final, with Robin Le Normand and Dani Carvajal both returning from suspension.

They are expected to replace Nacho Fernandez and 38-year-old Jesus Navas, the latter of whom did not play well against France and Mbappé and was knocked out in the second half.

Alvaro Morata started against France after rumours that he had also received his second yellow card of the tournament in the 2-1 extra-time win over hosts Germany in the quarter-finals turned out to be untrue. Spain did, however, get the fright of their lives when a security guard slipped and knocked his knee during the post-match celebrations.

De La Fuente initially expressed optimism that Morata would be able to play well, saying: “Alvaro, we have to wait and see tomorrow. We think it’s nothing. It hurts, but we think it’s nothing.”

Otherwise, Spain should have a full squad available, with only Pedri missing due to the knee injury he sustained against Germany. Olmo replaced him against France and will surely retain his place in midfield after another crucial goal.

Luke Shaw will push to start ahead of Kieran Trippier, who has overcome an injury that he took with him to Germany. After coming off the bench for the last two games and replacing Kieran Trippier at half-time in Dortmund, it is not certain that the Manchester United defender will start as England formulate a plan for the menacing Yamal on the Spanish right flank.

Watkins’ goal from the bench will also see him start in place of Harry Kane, who has been a disappointment for most of the tournament despite his three goals.

England are unlikely to see any changes for the remainder of the season as no other injury concerns were reported during the semi-final.

This confrontation could become a familiar one in the coming years at the forefront of major tournaments.

Spain are a youthful, well-organised and energetic team with a lot of flair and also a ruthless streak. Apart from a few dull displays at this Euro, the exact same description could easily apply to England.

If this turns into a dour, gruelling match, it will be in the Three Lions’ favour, while Spain could pose a huge threat if given the space to attack.

It’s very difficult to predict and it could easily go completely wrong…
