Toronto Weather: Heat Warning Issued by Environment Canada

The Canadian National Weather Service is warning of high temperatures in the Toronto area on Monday.

The warning, issued by Environment Canada on Sunday, predicts daytime highs of nearly 31 C (88 F) in several regions, including Toronto, Hamilton, Burlington-Oakville, Halton Hills-Milton and Mississauga-Brampton. With humidity, some areas in the region will feel like 35 to 38.

Environment Canada said there will be little relief tonight, with lows of 20 C or higher expected. A cooler air mass is expected to arrive Tuesday night.

The elderly, babies and young children, pregnant women, people with physical and/or mental conditions, and people with disabilities or mobility problems may be at greater health risks from the heat.

People are urged to be aware of the effects of heat illness, such as swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and worsening of certain health conditions.

“Drink plenty of water regularly, even before you feel thirsty, to reduce your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration,” Environment Canada urged.

“Never leave people, especially children, or pets in a parked vehicle.”

Delays possible at Toronto Pearson Airport

Toronto Pearson International Airport is warning travelers of possible delays due to the heat.

“We expect it to be a hot day as Environment Canada’s heat warning indicates daytime temperatures could rise by 35 to 38 degrees Celsius due to humidex,” read the statement shared on social media Monday morning.

“In this heat, our focus is on safety to provide adequate breaks so that outdoor workers can stay cool. This means that your plane may take longer than expected to reach the gate, or your baggage processing may be delayed.”

The airport said flights from Pearson to Texas could also be disrupted on Monday as the airport monitors the impact of Hurricane Beryl.
