Charge upgraded in fatal collision that killed Guelph cyclist

Charges have been increased against a driver accused in a fatal collision in Guelph, Ont., last month, police say.

Police and paramedics were called to Victoria Road North, the new St. James Catholic High School, on September 5 around 1:00 PM ET after a female cyclist was hit by a car. The driver of the car took off and did not check on the cyclist, police said.

The 78-year-old woman, identified by friends and volunteer groups as Susan Bard, was rushed to a Hamilton hospital in a critical condition. She later died from her injuries.

At the time, a 35-year-old Guelph man was accused of failing to stop after an accident resulting in bodily injury.

Police said Tuesday that the charge has now been upgraded to failure to remain during a collision resulting in death. The man also faces another charge under the Road Traffic Act for driving an unsafe vehicle.

The man is due to appear in court on October 18.

Call for road safety awareness

Bard’s death prompted cycling advocates in the city to call for more awareness about road safety.

The Guelph Coalition for Active Transportation released a statement.

“Not everyone can, wants or should drive, but everyone has the inherent right to navigate their communities with dignity, choice and safety,” the group said.

“Until we achieve the necessary infrastructure improvements, it is critical to demonstrate additional patience and understanding and take a collective responsibility to support each other as we advocate for a safer, more inclusive environment for all.”
