What’s Open and Closed on Canada Day in Calgary

Canada Day celebrations will be happening all over the city, but not everything in Calgary will be open on Monday.

Arenas, indoor pools, fitness centers, Southland and Village Square recreation centers; the Calgary Soccer Center and the North Mount Pleasant and Wildflower arts centers are all closed on Canada Day.

Glenmore Reservoir will be open for recreational use and boat rentals, as will city-operated golf courses and driving ranges.

All landfills in the city – East Calgary, Spyhill and Shepard – will be open Monday.

The city noted in a news release Thursday that the Canyon Meadows Aquatic and Fitness Center and the Sir Winston Churchill Aquatic and Recreation Center will close for two to three months on July 1 for electrical repairs.

Transportation in Calgary

Calgary Transit will operate the same schedule on Canada Day on Sunday.

The city will use extra bus routes to get everyone who experiences the fireworks show home safely. Visit the Calgary Transit website for a full list of additional routes.

Parking in the on-street ParkPlus zones and in the parking garages of Calgary Parking (excluding the Arts Commons) will be free starting July 1.

Regular parking rates apply at the city’s partner parking lots in Telus Spark, University District, Calgary Zoo and Heritage Park.

There will also be some road closures in the East Village from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. Monday, including:

  • Eighth Avenue SE from Fourth Street SE to Sixth Street SE
  • Sixth Street SE from Ninth Avenue SE to Eighth Avenue SE
  • Fifth Street SE from Ninth Avenue SE to Seventh Avenue SE

A current list of traffic notices and road closures in Calgary can be found on the city’s website.
